Put a little money to work. Our Cabot Tides turned positive yesterday, so both the intermediate- and longer-term trends of the market are now pointed up. That said, there remain many crosscurrents and growth stocks are generally struggling.

Yesterday, the stock market had its worst day since October; the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500 all declined over 1%. Financials and materials stocks were the biggest losers, while safe havens gained.

With the market remaining under intense pressure, you should remain cautious until the buyers show up. Today we’re selling one-third of one position, which will leave the Model Portfolio with nearly 60% in cash.

The Emerging Markets Timer is in fine shape after Wednesday’s big rally. We have no changes to the portfolio today.

The market continues to act well, and we’re finally starting to see a bit of improvement among growth stocks, which showed solid accumulation last week and have begun to tighten up. That said, cyclical stocks remain strong, so tonight, we’re adding one to the Model Portfolio, giving us seven stocks (out of a possible 10) and a cash position around 30%.

When I’m out and about in the world, talking to investors, I’ve noticed that when I mention my goal of minimizing the risk associated with stock investing, people’s eyes glaze over. I’ve come to realize that people generally believe eliminating risk actually means eliminating reward. Holy moly, NO!

The market suffered its worst day in months today, with the Dow down 238 points and the Nasdaq finished down 108 points.

Adobe Systems (ADBE) reported first-quarter 2017 earnings yesterday (November year-end), after the market closed. The company outperformed analysts’ estimates by a good margin, and also increased second-quarter expectations.

After shooting to new all-time highs last Wednesday, the major indexes are taking a well-deserved breather this week. The pullback looks orderly and normal so far, and investors with money to put to work can use it as a buying opportunity.

Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) is under pressure today as the company continues to battle with Indonesian authorities regarding its big mine in that country.

Should the market resume its uptrend, we’ll look to put our cash to work, but tonight, with our Tides still negative, we’ll sit tight.

Ongoing problems in China’s travel industry are concerning me enough that I am moving one of our stocks from Strong Buy to Hold.

The stock market’s pullback resumed yesterday, but this still looks like a normal retreat following a breakneck four-month rally. One warning light is decreasing breadth, which suggests that when the rally gets going again, it could be driven by a smaller group of stocks.

All of our market timing indicators remain bullish, and the major indexes and many stocks are attempting to resume their post-election uptrends. In the Model Portfolio, we have three changes tonight.

Remain cautious! The sellers continue to have the upper hand with the major indexes and most stocks. You should be holding plenty of cash (and some resilient stocks) while waiting for the bulls to retake control.
