  • The market’s nascent downturn remains in effect, with the short-term trend of most indexes and sectors pointed down and with growth stocks bringing up the rear (though today was a good first step to reverse that). Even so, the pullback from a top-down perspective continues to look normal, so we’re not hiding in our storm cellar, either—we’re hanging onto our resilient, profitable stocks while nibbling here or there on high-odds opportunities. We’ll leave our Market Monitor at a level 6 today.

One of the more encouraging things of the past three weeks is that we’re not having trouble finding good-potential names with solid charts, and this week’s list is no different. Our Top Pick is a great growth story and now, after a couple of bad years, all of the firm’s metrics are pointed in the right direction.
  • We comment on earnings from Bayer AG (BAYRY), Berkshire Hathaway (BRK/B), Brookfield Reinsurance Ltd (BNRE), Elanco Animal Health (ELAN), Kopin Corporation (KOPN), L.B. Foster (FSTR), Six Flags Entertainment (SIX), TreeHouse Foods (THS), Tyson Foods (TSN) and Viatris (VTRS).
  • This week Chris and Brad talk about the latest Chinese GDP numbers and whether it’s safe to invest in China, Tesla’s earnings release, and what they’re seeing with Regional banks now that they’re reporting. After that, they break down FAANG stocks, their popular ascent as market shorthand, and whether Microsoft is “sexy” enough to sit at the cool kids’ table.
  • Stop me if you have heard this before, but inflation data and the moves in the bond market continue to be the major drivers of the market’s moves. And last week traders weren’t thrilled with these inputs as the S&P 500 fell by 1%, the Dow gained 0.5% and the Nasdaq continued its recent weakness with a further decline of 2%.
  • In this week’s video, Mike Cintolo talks about the market’s under-the-surface improvement that he’s seeing; no indicators have changed, which will need to happen for him to extend his line in a big way, but there’s no question most stuff has seen improvement and more stocks are beginning to act properly. Mike did a little buying this week and is hoping to add more should the market be able to build on the recent action.
  • Earnings season is about over. And the end of the summer is upon us.

This is a weird time of year for the market. Investors tend to pay less attention because many of them are focused on trying to squeeze in the last bit of summer fun and laxness before it slips away. The market tends to do whatever it was doing before people stopped paying attention.

It was going sideways, and that is what it will likely continue to do for the next several weeks. Of course, a major headline could certainly change that. But most often these waning days of summer tend to be less eventful.
  • In the August Issue of Cabot Early Opportunities, we talk about what happened to the summer stock rally and dig into five companies selling everything from coffee to sporting goods to mobile advertising tools.

    Enjoy!
  • August has been a slog for investors, as an uneven earnings season has given the sellers the full buckets they needed to throw a bit of cold water on the 2023 bull market. While high-flying growth stocks have certainly taken it on the chin, especially on earnings, the overall market pullback has been fairly modest, and probably healthy in the long run. With prices lower than they were in July, particularly among growth stocks, today we add a big name with a revolutionary product that many people already use regularly – though only about half the country has access to it. That will soon change, which is why Cabot Growth Investor’s Mike Cintolo is high on it.
  • The good times are here again. The S&P 500 is up over 19% YTD and is now within just 4% of the all-time high. Stocks are in a strong uptrend that began in the beginning of May and appear likely to move still higher.

Inflation is crashing. The Fed is about out of bullets. And there is no recession in sight. Things could always discombobulate down the road. But there doesn’t appear at this point to be anything ahead in the next month or so that will change the current positive narrative.
  • As earnings season approaches the midway point, and following the Federal Reserve’s announcement of a 25-basis point interest rate hike last week, the market continued its ascent. For the week the S&P 500 gained 1%, the Dow rose by 0.65% and the Nasdaq added 2%.
  • Another interest rate hike and negative second-quarter earnings growth have done little to slow the bull market rally or investor confidence, so this week we add a “Bull Market Stock” to take advantage of the strength. It’s a term coined by our Mike Cintolo, so naturally, today we add Mike’s favorite Bull Market Stock, one he recently recommended to his Cabot Top Ten Trader audience, a company that benefits directly anytime there’s a bull market and the big institutions are buying stocks hand over fist.
  • Ahead of the long holiday weekend the market had yet another good week. The S&P 500 gained 1.75%, the Dow rallied 1.5%, and the Nasdaq rose another 1.9%.

This week in an attempt to diversify the portfolio we are adding an energy play.
  • The major indexes all closed last week near their highs, which is one big factor keeping the top-down evidence very bullish; nothing has changed with our big picture positive thoughts. That said, right now, we don’t think the situation is as strong as the indexes suggest—just looking at a variety of names, it’s clear many are consolidating even as the S&P and Nasdaq tested new high ground late last week. Again, we’re not saying that’s a big bugaboo, but right now, we continue to think being more discerning when looking for entry points makes sense, as does pruning some laggards if you have them. We’ll keep our Market Monitor at a level 7.

This week’s list has something for everyone, with a decent amount of cyclical exposure but also some true blue growth names as well. Our Top Pick is helping to lead a new group move in metal stocks in general (and copper in particular).
