  • The global trend toward financial technology has made fintech stocks a hot commodity. Here are seven worth your consideration.
  • This was a rather tough week for stocks though the financial media always goes overboard calling a 2% drop in the Nasdaq index a “plummet.”

For many analysts, copper prices have long been considered a better leading indicator regarding the health of the global economy. Bloomberg reports that Goldman Sachs has exited a long-term bullish position on copper while slashing its price forecast for 2025 by almost $5,000 a ton. The bank has been one of the biggest supporters of the industrial strategic metal, but the increasingly weak Chinese economy has crimped demand, plus excess inventories overhang supply resulting in copper prices being down almost 20% since May.
  • No matter where you are in your investing journey, this comprehensive list has a saving, spending, or investing app that can help you reach your goals.
  • This week’s Friday Update includes our comments on earnings reports from four companies and more color on our initial review of another company that reported last week. If Hollywood makes a movie about this market cycle, perhaps it will be called “Revenge of the Moat.”
  • There are only a few companies out there that provide the software that companies can use to implement IT cost-accounting. Today’s Cabot Small-Cap Confidential candidate is pioneering the entire movement.
  • Stocks keep reaching new heights, as last week’s concerns about the market starting to show cracks under the surface seem to have been overblown, at least in the near term. Third-quarter earnings season gets underway next week, and expectations are high again, with economists expecting 8% growth. Companies may have to exceed those lofty expectations to keep this rally going. For now, though, the market is rolling.

To account for some possible bumpiness ahead, however, today I’m adding a big-name value stock to our portfolio. It’s one that I recommended to my Cabot Value Investor audience last month, and it’s already off to a fast start. It’s a company that thrives when the global economy is sound – which it is, despite myriad fears to the contrary.

  • Markets were closed yesterday in honor of the late President Jimmy Carter.

No matter your politics, the service was well done and inspirational.

It was a solid opening this first week of 2025: new recommendation American Superconductor (AMSC) shares were up 10%, Centrus Energy (LEU) shares were up about 8%, Cloudflare (NET) shares were up 7.5%, and Dutch Bros (BROS) shares were up 7.3%.
  • The past week or so definitely showed some very encouraging action, with one of the key “blastoff” indicators we track turning green on Thursday. So does that mean we’re off to the races? Well, we wouldn’t go there, at least not yet: The intermediate-term trend of the market and most stocks are still down, and it’s not unusual at all to see some near-term wobbles after this kind of blastoff signal. All in all, we think there’s enough good vibes to extend your line a bit—but we don’t advise buying hand over fist as we’re still looking to see added confirmation. We’ll bump up our Market Monitor two notches to a level 5.

This week’s list is full of resilient names, though many have earnings coming up, so be aware of those dates. Our Top Pick has a great story, great numbers and a resilient chart, with shares back near their highs after a bullish earnings reaction. Start small here or on dips.
  • Stocks slipped a bit yesterday after minutes from the Federal Reserve’s last meeting showed officials increasingly in agreement about pulling back on the central bank stimulus. This was prompted by increasing evidence of mounting inflation. Markets are a bit choppy against this backdrop but earnings continue to be relatively strong, such as Sea Limited (SE) posting another superlative quarter yesterday. This week you will see I have divided Explorer stock updates into two categories: “trading” and “buy and hold,” as we turn to clean tech infrastructure for a new recommendation.
  • The market’s resilience in the face of bad headlines (tariffs, higher inflation, an increasingly cautious Fed, etc.) continues to impress. And with the major indexes currently trading near their 2025 highs despite all the outside attempts to derail them, perhaps the next big market move will be up. With that in mind, today we add to our growth stockpile in the form of a former market (and Cabot) darling that was recently recommended by Mike Cintolo to his Cabot Growth Investor audience. After a rough stretch in mid-2024, the stock is soaring again.

  • Commodity prices, particularly copper, are back on the uptick, and that makes these three global mining stocks potentially very strong buy-low plays.
  • After months of losses, Kimberly-Clark threw a lifeline to struggling Tylenol maker Kenvue by offering to buy the company, but should you buy the stock?
  • This week, we review earnings reports from Capital One Financial (COF), General Electric (GE), Nokia (NOK), Western Digital (WDC) and Xerox Holdings (XRX).

Next week, we anticipate earnings from Polaris (PII) and Janus Henderson Group (JHG). Please know that some reporting dates are estimated based on the companies’ reporting history, others are confirmed dates. As always, it’s likely that some companies will report on a day different from what we anticipate.
  • I’m changing the stock rating on BorgWarner (BWA) to Hold, E*Trade Financial (ETFC) to Buy, H&R Block (HRB) to Hold and Vulcan Materials (VMC) to Hold. Quarterly earnings were reported last week by Big Lots and H&R Block. There’s dividend news on Big Lots (BIG), and there’s stock repurchase news on Big Lots (BIG), Delta Air Lines (DAL) and H&R Block (HRB).
  • The S&P 500 is essentially unchanged since Thanksgiving 2014! While there have been short periods of volatility (in just the last two weeks, it’s been down 5% then up 5%!), the S&P 500 can’t seem to break through the 2,000–2,100 range. With the market stuck in this range, and banks and bonds offering virtually zero yield, how can investors get ahead? One strategy that has been working well for investors is to buy the best dividend-paying stocks and apply an options strategy called a buy-write (also known as a covered call).
  • Going back to 1960, nearly 85% of the cumulative total return of the S&P 500 Index can be attributed to reinvested dividends. And that’s why today we’re adding a new high-yield fund to the portfolio that gives us exposure to fast-growing overseas markets.
  • There’s no question that, from a top-down perspective, the evidence has continued to improve over the past few weeks, with today seeing the market surge as the U.S. and China slashed tariffs on each other. That said, even with today’s run in the indexes, leadership is hard to spot—many names that approach old highs are rejected, with the buying focused on beaten-down names for the most part. Don’t get us wrong: We’re encouraged and extending our line, but we’re doing so slowly until some real leadership develops. Our Market Monitor stands at a level 6.

This week’s list has a mix of names from different sectors and with some at different areas on their charts. Our Top Pick staged a classic gap to new highs after earnings last week. We’re fine starting small here or on dips.
