  • Brick-and-mortar retail stocks were considered a bad investment a year ago. Now, thanks in part to COVID, they’re a hot sector.
  • Global pandemic and accompanying recession notwithstanding, the IPO market has been red-hot this year. Why?
  • I have a feeling that 2013 is going to present us with plenty of opportunities. And facing it with fresh batteries can only help.
  • It’s earnings season, which means that investors and analysts are focused, laser-like, on companies announcing their recent results and future expectations. Everyone focusing on the same thing inevitably translates into big moves on big volume. Dolby Laboratories (DLB) gapped up 17% Friday after it reported impressive earnings and good news, while...
  • If you’re looking to start an investment portfolio on the cheap, here are the three best stocks under $10 to buy with momentum.
  • As a growth investor, I use Story, Numbers and Chart (SNaC) to select the best stocks.
  • Earnings are saving this floundering market. The market was turning south again after a big rebound. But a promising earnings season stopped the slide.

It’s still early. But it appears that earnings will once again exceed expectations. That’s big. Not only are earnings what it’s all about. But it reminds investors that this economy is still strong, and much stronger than the current headlines indicate.

  • It’s one step forward and two steps back in this crummy market.
The indexes seem to stage an impressive rally at some point every week. But the S&P 500 has fallen for seven consecutive weeks, the longest such streak since 2001. It came within a whisker of a bear market (down 20% from the high on a closing basis) before the latest temporary rally on Monday.

  • WHAT TO DO NOW: Remain defensive. While there’s a chance the recent selling storm could be the final shakeout of this two-plus-month consolidation, the fact is the intermediate-term evidence (both top-down, and among many growth stocks) is now negative, with a lot of damage done to leaders. We’ve been holding a lot of cash for weeks but have pared back further, selling our remaining AppLovin (APP) stake on a special bulletin yesterday, leaving us with around a 66% cash position in the Model Portfolio. We have no changes tonight but are remaining flexible (buy or sell) for whatever comes next.
  • NOTE: A couple of things. First, we’re sending this update a day early, as the Friday holiday is pushing up our publishing schedule by a day. And second, I’m actually out of town on vacation, so while we’re sending this update this morning, we’ll follow up with a bulletin tomorrow morning if need be. If we’re not in touch, have a great holiday weekend!

WHAT TO DO NOW: Remain bullish but take things on a stock-by-stock basis. The overall market is in fine shape, but Tuesday saw a lot of selling in growth stocks as investors rotated into stodgy areas (Dow Industrials and defensive stocks). For now, the action is broadly acceptable, but the next few days will be key. Today, we are making some small changes: We’ll place Axon (AXON) and Rubrik (RBRK) on Hold and we’re going to sell one-third of our remaining position of Palantir (PLTR), leaving us with around 23% in cash.
  • We’re putting our mining helmets back on today and taking a position in a speculative micro-cap gold and copper exploration company that’s just about to get the drills turning.

This type of stock is intended to scratch the speculator’s itch. It’s not suitable for investing money that you need. That said, if things go well – and I think there’s a good chance they will – the returns could be spectacular.

But please, go in with eyes wide open. This is supposed to be fun.
  • This month we’re digging into an emerging software star that specializes in helping brands communicate with consumers like you and me.

The details behind the technology are a bit technical. But if you’ve noticed an uptick in personalized emails and text messages letting you know it’s a good night to get takeout, or that those shoes you’ve been pining for are back in stock, you get the picture. Enjoy!
  • WHAT TO DO NOW: Remain bullish. The market has reacted well to the election and took today’s Fed decision in stride; both of our trend-following indicators are bullish and leading growth stocks remain in good shape. Today, we took partial profits in AppLovin (APP) via a special bulletin after it went vertical on earnings. But tonight, we’re putting that and a bit more money back to work via two new positions—starting half-sized stakes in Samsara (IOT) and the ProShares Ultra Russell 2000 Fund (UWM), leaving us with a cash position around 18%.
  • This week, about half of the Federal government shut down, causing stocks to waver and gold prices to spike due to uncertainty over how and when the budget duel might end. There are few winners in this tug-of-war scenario. This is not a good time for this showdown given weak business spending, a weak dollar, and weak job growth. The market normally takes these political fights in stride depending how long they last. Stay positive but cautious, and as always look for some profits to take off the table.
  • WHAT TO DO NOW: The top-down, market-wide evidence remains in good shape, and encouragingly, growth stocks have revved up decently over the past week, though the action remains heavily concentrated in AI infrastructure-type names. There are still lots of crosscurrents and many names are hitting the occasional pothole, though, so picking your stocks and spots remains vital. In the Model Portfolio we’re making one new buy—a half-sized stake in Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (ALNY)—while placing MP Materials (MP) on Hold. We could have some other moves in the next few days (including averaging up on names in the portfolio), but tonight we’ll buy ALNY and go from there. Our cash position will be around 43%.
