  • The bull market rolls on, and our portfolio continues to deliver, so I continue to recommend that you be heavily invested in stocks that help achieve your investing goals.

Today’s featured stock is making a repeat appearance, because we lost it on a shakeout earlier this year and I think it’s worth trying again.

As for the current portfolio, Tesla (TSLA) and Trulieve (TCNNF) are upgraded to buy, but we’re selling Coca Cola (KO), mainly because something’s got to go.

  • Stocks are finally showing signs of life. After a miserable six-week stretch, stocks – with an assist from cooler inflation numbers – appear to be getting in gear. How long the new rally will last may depend on things like Q4 earnings, the early days of Donald Trump’s second term, and what Jerome Powell says next week. But for now, let’s strike while the iron is hot, or at least warm, and add a growth stock whose name you might recognize since so many people use their platform these days. It’s a new recommendation from Cabot Early Opportunities Chief Analyst Tyler Laundon.

  • Markets are a bit subdued with low summertime volatility, though some Explorer recommendations are doing very well in the power sectors of cyber and space. Today we take a look at Brazil, which is struggling with high unemployment, Covid-19 and political instability though we offer a new recommendation in a high-growth sector with a clear uptrend in share price.
  • The S&P 500, Nasdaq and Russell 2000 are all up modestly compared to a week ago, while the S&P 600 is roughly flat.

Between the two small-cap indices, the Russell 2000 has been the stronger performer lately. It has a higher proportion of more speculative, lower quality stocks (i.e., those with lower or negative earnings), which have attracted more attention than the comparatively higher-quality (i.e., those with higher or positive earnings) stocks in the S&P 600 index.
  • The big macro news of the week wasn’t specific to small caps, but it sure helped in stopping a sliding small-cap index at its 25-day moving average line yesterday.

I’m referring to the CPI print for November, which was released at 8:30 AM ET yesterday and gave most of the major market indices a boost, with the exception of the Dow.
  • The market has gotten a lot bumpier in November, though the major indexes haven’t given up much ground. That’s because even as the air comes out of the (perhaps overinflated) artificial intelligence balloon of late, investors are instead rotating into the many under-loved names in other sectors. Today, we add a stock in one of those underappreciated sectors. It’s an educational company that Carl Delfeld recommended to his Cabot Explorer audience last month. And the stock is having a solid year.

  • Despite the headwinds of trade tensions and pundits worrying about China growth, our Explorer portfolio holdings Sea, Alibaba, Luckin Coffee and Huya all reported outstanding financial results this week.

The Emerging Markets (EEM) Timer is still positive as we introduce a new resource recommendation with operations at the very heart of Asia-Pacific growth.
  • Roku stock has already more than doubled since its September IPO. Is it too late to buy at these inflated levels? Here’s what I think.
  • The S&P 600 Small Cap Index has drifted a little lower this week but made a nice move over the last month as interest rates declined. The S&P 600 iShares ETF (IJR) is up 7% over the last five weeks.

The chart inside shows how clear the inverse relationship between the IJR (green line) and the 10-year yield (blue line) is.
  • U.S. stock markets, as represented by the S&P 500 (SPX) and Dow Jones (DJIA) indexes, continue reaching new highs. But stocks and stock markets don’t go straight up, even during bull runs.
  • You may have noticed that last week when Nvidia (NDVA) announced its earnings, its stock rose 16% while Explorer recommendation Super Micro Computer (SMCI) went up 32%.

This is consistent with my view that Super Micro is a leveraged bet on artificial intelligence (AI), and I expect this will also be the case when Nvidia’s stock price moves the other way. Nvidia is now priced at an incredible 32 times trailing annual sales and has a larger market cap than Germany’s entire blue-chip DAX index. Super Micro has already tripled in 2024 so consider taking partial profits. Remember, J.P. Morgan allegedly stated that he made his greatest profits by selling too soon.
  • It was a strong week for the market following the Federal Reserve meeting. And while some talking heads may say the reason the indexes rallied was the Fed’s moves, or lack thereof, more likely the reason is we are in a bull market.

By week’s end, the S&P 500 gained 1.4%, the Dow rallied 1.6% and the Nasdaq advanced by 1.7%.
  • It hasn’t been smooth, of course, but the market’s evidence has improved a bit during the past six or seven weeks. The way we look at this is that the market has put itself in a position to do something positive in the intermediate-term—but it still has to actually do it, meaning show enough strength to turn the trends up and see more stocks break out and follow through to higher prices. Right now we remain in watch and wait mode: We’re keeping our eyes open, but it’s best to remain defensive until the bulls show us more.

This week’s list is again heavy on biotech and Chinese names, though we’re also seeing some strength in a few new (but smaller and sometimes less liquid) growth names. Our Top Pick is a unique medical-related outfit whose stock is changing character for the better.

  • Two stocks are moving up and a third stock is moving from Buy to Strong Buy.
  • Stocks are at all-time highs, yet again, defying the myriad potential macro tailwinds (expanding war in the Middle East, looming presidential election, another damaging hurricane, Q3 earnings season underway, etc.) that have been threatening to derail the market. One of them still could, but for now, we’ll stick with what’s in front of us, and that’s a market with plenty of momentum. Today, we lean into that momentum by adding a mid-cap tech stock recently recommended by Tyler Laundon to his Cabot Early Opportunities audience.
