  • Finally! The Fed met yesterday and, as expected, began a rate cutting cycle. The market, and small caps, love it.

The magnitude of the September cut, 50 bps, is a bit of a surprise. Despite what Fed Chair Jerome Powell said during the press conference yesterday, this is partially a make-up cut. Since there was no meeting in August, and the Fed didn’t cut in July, it was time to make a statement.
  • There are a lot of high-quality stocks trading at value prices out there. For next week’s recommendation, I’m looking at semiconductor companies worldwide and will try to pick the stock with the most upside and lowest downside risk. This is as Congress wrangles over the $52 billion CHIPS act to support the domestic semiconductor supply chain.

  • Acme Packet (APKT) and SanDisk (SNDK) were both recently featured in Cabot Top Ten Report.
  • The market forces do have a profound effect, as illustrated recently by the bourbon and oil markets.

  • While every investor knows the terms bull market and bear market, every investor seems to have a different definition of each. Some people consider any period of rising prices a bull market. Others require that prices generally rise for a certain time--maybe six months--to be called a bull market. And of course there’s the popular (though highly flawed) view that any 20% move up in an index represents a new bull market, while a 20% decline constitutes a bear market. Adding complexity to these simple phrases is the cyclical versus secular debate. Simply put, a secular bull market is one that supposedly lasts many years or even decades.
  • Despite an onslaught of tariff headlines and rumors, the holiday-shortened week was mostly quiet outside of a nasty sell-off on Wednesday. By week’s end the S&P 500 had lost 1.5%, the Dow had fallen 2.7% and the Nasdaq had declined by 2.6%.

  • The S&P 600 SmallCap Index is flat over the last week.

The upside move from the extreme oversold conditions that began two weeks ago has faded as the market grapples with tariff uncertainty.

Uncertainty will continue to linger even though Trump clarified part of his tariff plan last night through an executive order imposing permanent tariffs on autos not produced in the U.S.

  • Many enlightening, interesting and even touching articles have been written since Steve Jobs’ death last week. It’s clear he had an immense positive impact on our world, and I don’t think I have anything to add to what’s been said. So why do I bring it up? One of the most...

  • Market Gauge is 6Current Market Outlook

If you haven’t stuck with a proven system in 2015, chances are you’ve been chopped to pieces by the market’s never-ending ups and downs. Today was another headline-driven selloff (Chinese stocks are seeing renewed weakness), but it doesn’t change the market’s condition—the intermediate-term trend is still sideways, with some stocks acting fine and others looking like it’s 2008. The plan remains the same—be selective on the buy side, honor all stops and hold some cash, but also give your most resilient stocks a chance to hold up and resume their advances. If leading stocks decisively break down, then we’ll change our tune, but so far focusing on the strongest stocks has been fruitful.
