The big thing on most investors’ minds is whether or not this market can go higher.

After an insane couple of weeks this one has felt relatively calm. There is still plenty of market-moving news around the election, vaccines, the pandemic’s frightening trajectory, etc. but I think we’ve all become somewhat accustomed enough to alarming headlines – within a certain range – that it’s harder to get shaken now than in the past.

The broad stock market remains healthy, with all indexes at or near highs, with the exception of small-cap stocks, which are lagging. A rising tide lifts all boats.

Small caps continue to move higher so keep leaning bullish, but be mindful that we’re near a resistance area and that it’s equally likely we will see some softness as it is that we will see more strength.

One of the stocks in our Growth Portfolio issued new quarterly adjusted earnings guidance this morning, pleasing investors and sending the stock up 6% upon the market’s open.

As we close out the fourth week of 2019 small caps are looking good.

Today, I’m creating a fourth portfolio category within Cabot Undervalued Stocks Advisor: Special Situations. This will be a portfolio for capital gain opportunities that do not conveniently fit into the other three portfolios.

Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) reports first-quarter 2019 results.

The broad market has advanced nicely since mid-day Monday when news that the Fed might lower interest rates sparked a wave of buying. Long-term, the future is bright. But short-term, the portfolio is happy holding a cash level of 23%, deferring new buying.
