Last week marked the fourth straight week of declines for the S&P 500 and was the worst week so far this year, down nearly 3%.

The problem is inflation, go figure. The Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation, the Personal Expenditures Price Index (PCE), was much higher than expected in January and showed inflation moving higher, not lower, to start the year.

The stock market’s strong and resilient upward march this year to a 32% total return was great. Yet, few, including us, expected such an uplifting outcome in 2019.

While the market digests the JPMorgan (JPM) buyout of First Republic Bank (FRC), the largest bank failure since the financial crisis, it looks ahead to a packed week. Despite the good results and outlook, we’re going to sell another one-quarter position to take our stake down to one half today. The bottom line is it continues to be a challenging environment for pure growth stocks, and we need to continue to adapt to the times.

Cloudflare (NET) reported Q4 results yesterday that surpassed expectations. Revenue was up 54% to $193.6 million while adjusted EPS came in at $0.01. As compared to some other software stocks that have beat expectations, Cloudflare reinvested the surplus cash in growth initiatives, so it didn’t flow to the bottom line.

This stock reported first-quarter earnings that beat expectations last night. However, the stock declined in after-hours trading.

One of the portfolio stocks reported last night and, as is typical, the company surpassed expectations and gave us a bare bones report.

The major indexes continue to hit new highs, all Cabot’s market timing indicators remain positive, and our portfolio is solid, overall, with the exception of Designer Brands (DBI), which reported third-quarter earnings this morning; more on that in the update section.



As for today’s new recommendation, it’s a brand new business with a familiar name—a high-risk/high-potential investment. It’s not for everyone, and it will be volatile. But it could change the world!
