  • So let’s just suppose that you actually want to retire at some point in the future. If you’re like most people, you’re probably a little behind in funding that retirement--especially after the wealth-gutting market of the last year--and you’re wondering if you can catch up. We clearly believe that investors who are willing to invest the time, energy and (of course) money in a disciplined and systematic way can indeed make AND KEEP big money over time.
  • Why doesn’t economic news affect my market outlook? The reason for that can be explained in my favorite quote, which is carved on the mantel above the fireplace at Cabot: “Markets are never wrong; opinions are.” The infamous trader Jesse Livermore is responsible for this gem. Far too many investors fail to leave their egos and opinions at the door and this is the #1 reason most investors lose money, or at best produce lackluster returns.
  • So with the Detroit auto show starting this week and running through January 25, I’ve been paying attention to what might be coming down the line. No surprise, there are lots of electric and hybrid concept cars on display, including the Chevy Volt. And yes, the Volt is still scheduled to go into production--at the end of 2010, about 23 months from now. That’s a long ways off, especially when you realize that a full two years have passed already since the car was first announced.
  • I make my living writing advice about aggressive growth stocks in emerging markets, which is a fairly risky business. I don’t just mean that emerging market stocks are risky, although that’s true, too. No, even the writing part is risky. It’s not as risky as writing about penny stocks, bulletin board stocks and pink sheet stocks, but there’s enough risk to make things exciting. It’s entirely understandable that people who read my recommendations can get a little peeved when the stocks I write about go down. But one unexpected result of airing my opinions about growth stocks is that I sometimes get complaints from people even when stocks go up!
  • For almost everything we buy in life, price matters. From gasoline to automobiles, cheeseburgers to chateaubriand, we’ve learned that the lower the price, the better the deal.
  • Since 2004, value investors from across the country have converged on the Value Investing Congress, and this year our very own J. Royden Ward, editor of Cabot Benjamin Graham Value Letter, is going to attend. It’s taking place in New York City on October 6 and 7 (with a pre-conference workshop on October 5) and will be attended by value investors and money managers from around the world seeking to enhance their performance.
  • We had a terrific week with the vast majority of our stocks, supported by a 0.8% rise in the S&P 600 Small Cap Index. That’s not a big move, but given the recent break-out to all-time highs, a little follow-on strength across the board suggests the market could be setting up for another run higher.
  • We may look to exit a few positions on strength over the coming weeks/months, but those moves will depend on share price momentum and/or earnings results. More companies have announced their earnings release dates, and three companies report next week. We have no ratings changes this week.
  • The stock market has been having quite the party over the past month. Since November 8, the date of the election, the S&P 500 is up by 4.8%. Small caps have crushed that performance, rising by almost 16% over the same timeframe.
  • Our LogMeIn (LOGM) position is now up 45%, and I’m recommending selling a portion of your stock to lock in the gain.
  • As Congress struggled with raising the debt ceiling, the excess of Federal spending over tax revenue totaled $459 billion through the first four months of the fiscal year (started October 1, 2022). Meanwhile, the strong dollar is a drag on multinational earnings. Today, we explore a fascinating company and stock that leverages artificial intelligence to accelerate biotech development.
  • Yes, as many of you have anticipated, Tesla (TSLA) is the eighth in my series of “10 Revolutionary Stocks.”
  • Over the past seven years, I’ve been running a series titled, “10 Stocks to Buy & Hold Forever.”
  • In honor of the two-year anniversary of Cabot Small-Cap Confidential, I’ve been bringing you a multi-part series with Editor Thomas Garrity. Today he’ll reveal some of his time-tested investing rules.
  • Tim Lutts’ list of five programs that aren’t working and five things that are.
  • We are in the midst of a rally that has continued for about two months. This market seems to want to go higher. While the rally has slowed significantly from the initial bounce off the lows in March, the overall market is still in an uptrend.
  • The year is starting out great! There was some volatility associated with the Iran thing but it looks like that, along with trade issues, has faded from the headlines, for now.
  • The S&P 500 has now regained more than half of what it lost in the bear market selloff. We are still in the midst of a six-week rally, although it has leveled off in the past few weeks. What can you expect going forward?
