  • The digital marketing world has been turned upside down as new privacy measures make it more challenging to track consumers across online and in-app activities.

But one company has been building out a unique opt-in data set and the backend technology to do just that. It sells this information to the biggest companies in the world so they can reach consumers with personalized marketing messages. With the new privacy measures, business is strong.

All the details are inside the May Issue of Cabot Small-Cap Confidential.
  • This morning, from Normandy to Washington, D.C., there will be ceremonies honoring the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Now, we are amidst a different type of struggle, and semiconductor chips are at the heart of it all. And today’s new Explorer recommendation is one of the more important cogs in that global struggle.
  • Despite weakness in the broad market today’s addition is holding up very well. The company specializes in simulation software – programs that tell users what a physical object, or process, may or may not do.
  • We’ve been writing for a few weeks that many secondary indicators were near levels normally associated with the market lows, so if something actually went right in the world, the market could respond powerfully—and we’re optimistic that process is now underway as interest rates have fallen off and the market popped beautifully last week. In response we’re bumping up our Market Monitor ... but only to a level 5 at this point, as the intermediate-term trend still isn’t up. Long story short: We’re OK throwing a couple more lines in the water, but we want to see constructive action from here (tame pullbacks, more breakouts, etc.) before turning truly bullish.

This week’s list has charts in a few different places (some coming off the lows, some near new highs, etc.), but a ton of them reacted well to earnings and most should do well if the market follows through on its rally. Our Top Pick is a stock that, after many months of tedious action, appears to be ready to resume its major upmove.
  • The story remains mostly the same in the market as it has for the past few weeks: The intermediate-term trend for nearly all major indexes and the vast majority of individual stocks is pointed down. That said, there also are a decent number of stocks holding up fairly well—and with earnings season starting in a major way this week, the potential is there for some leadership to develop if we see some strong upside gaps following reports. We’re all for it happening, but overall it’s best to remain cautious as the market attempts to turn the corner. Once again, we’ll leave our Market Monitor at a level 5.

This week’s list has a wide array of good-looking names, though for our Top Pick we’re going with a liquid leader that, while not in the first inning of its run, acts like it wants to go higher.
  • We can’t say the market is out of the woods, as some major indexes still have work to do (small caps were very weak today) and a couple of bad days could be damaging. But just going with what we see, it’s hard not to be encouraged about last week’s action—after a month of pulling back, no primary indicator flipped to negative, and among individual stocks, the vast majority retreated grudgingly before many took off on the upside in recent days. We’re not going to overreact to a day or two of action, but the fact that our screens are turning up many more high-potential names has us nudging our Market Monitor back up to a level 7—though, as always, we’ll see how it goes during this week’s gauntlet of economic reports.

This week’s list is chock-full of solid growth ideas, with a smattering of cyclical exposure as well. Our Top Pick is a growth name that just broke out from a two-year base after earnings.
  • This month we’re looking past all the current uncertainty in the market at a profitable, young company that should hold its own during this rough patch then accelerate growth into the back half of 2020 (assuming the pandemic eases as we move into the summer months).

The company offers intelligent identity solutions for global enterprises. These solutions are strategic imperatives because they help workers do their job from anywhere and help companies streamline customer experiences.

It’s not the type of stock that’s likely to surge on expectations of an immediate surge in demand, like Zoom Video (ZM) or Teladoc (TDOC). But with 115% net revenue retention the company should grow with current clients in the near-term, then grab its fair share of new business once economic activity picks up again.

We start today with a half position given the market conditions. All the details are inside.

  • The market needed a correction and now we have one, or at least the start of one. And the kickoff has been powerful enough to turn our short-term timing indicator negative, which means it’s time to turn a bit defensive, raising cash and leaning toward lower-risk investments. Thus, we sell two more stocks today and downgrade two to hold.As for the new recommendation, it’s a slow and steady telecom company that not only pays a good dividend but also is poised to benefit from the rollout of 5G technology.Full details in the issue.
  • The market’s main trends remain up, and thus I remain bullish, while continuing to remind you that a balanced portfolio with attention to risk management is always smart.
  • There isn’t a ton of good news in this new issue, but there are definite signs that emerging market stocks are making an effort at putting in a bottom. Emerging market stocks (as reflected in the MSCI EM ETF) are above their 25-day moving average and have put a little daylight between themselves and their late-October low. We’re also seeing a few stocks attracting flashes of buying interest, which is also a hopeful sign.
  • Emerging markets are seeing a boost from positive news out of Hong Kong and on the U.S.-China front. Our Emerging Markets Timer has raced higher in recent days, putting it within striking distance of a new buy signal. Our new recommendation comes from an unexpected country, but a well established semi-monopoly industry.
  • This week’s recommendation is a special situation—a transport stock that, thanks mostly to a game changing acquisition, is poised for major earnings growth. And the stock is holding up well after a recent earnings pop.
  • I’m in Japan this week as Warren Buffett indicated that his Berkshire is raising its stakes in Mitsubishi, Marubeni, Mitsui, Itochu and Sumitomo. Berkshire’s average holding across the five stocks increased by just over one percentage point to about 9.3%. This comes as financial pundits continue to determine the meaning of why Berkshire has accumulated a massive cash position.

Perhaps Buffett is betting that America’s share of global equity indices may be close to peaking at almost 70%.
  • Please note that next Thursday is July 4th and therefore there will not be a Cabot Explorer issue though I will send out an alert if there is any significant news on our stocks.

For Explorer stocks this week, Neo Performance (NOPMF) shares were up 12%, and Super Micro (SMCI) gave back half of last week’s 20% gain.

The dollar rose to its highest level since last year as the Federal Reserve breaks with other central banks by keeping interest rates elevated, giving global investors an incentive to move cash to the U.S. to capture higher bond yields.
