  • Led higher by major tech stocks (and especially AAPL) the Nasdaq gained nearly 4% last week, closing at a new record high. Less impressive were the other leading indexes, though their gains were very positive as well as the S&P 500 added 2.4%, while the Dow rallied 1.3%.

  • Somewhat quietly, the Dow has rallied eight straight days, and is leading the market higher as of late. Such is the rotation of the market, especially during earnings season (which I touch on in this issue).

For the week the S&P 500 gained 1.4%, the Dow rallied 1.75% and the Nasdaq gained 1%.

  • Ahead of a holiday-shortened week, last week was mostly quiet as the S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq were all down marginally.

And while the market may be slow again this week headed into the Fourth of July, this is the start of the third quarter, which could bring some volatility ahead of the presidential election.

  • With the market becoming less supportive, I’m dialing back the aggression, so this week’s recommendation is a lower-risk company in the pharmaceutical sector that pays a solid dividend.
As for the current portfolio, our three energy stocks remain very strong, and there are no changes.

    Details inside.

  • If all you’re doing is saving for the future, you (and your money) just aren’t working hard enough.
  • Fears about the 10-year Treasury yield have caused a legitimate market correction in recent days. How long will those fears linger?
  • There’s no such thing as a perfect market timing system, which is why we use tried and true fundamental and technical analysis to find stocks like these.
  • After bumping up against its 200-day moving average line the S&P 500 has pulled back this week. The S&P 600 Small Cap Index has followed suit.
  • This month we are changing things up a little and featuring a small company I suspect you’ve never heard of. It’s an up-and-coming Canadian media production and distribution company.

The company’s content has increasingly shown up on Netflix, AppleTV+, HBO Max, Amazon and Peacock. Much of the programming is for kids and families, which is where the growth and more significant deal flow is. But the company has also had many years of success in reality TV.

It is a speculative investment and trading liquidity is thin, so treat it appropriately and space out share purchases. Part of the strategy here is that we’re following a micro-cap fund that I respect into this trade, and their successful track record, philosophy and long-term holding strategy lends credibility beyond the increasingly visible presence of the company’s programming.

  • The cannabis sector remains in a correction, with Canadian stocks in particular still struggling—even as Cannabis 2.0 promises new retail opportunities. But the fundamentals of the industry remain bright, and investors are now beginning to discriminate between the winners and the losers—with the best stocks showing substantial increases in buying volume recently.

The portfolio remains more than a third in cash, waiting for the sector’s main trend to turn up, and there are just two small adjustments today. The portfolio will sell half its position in Cresco Labs (CRLBF) and double its position in Innovative Industrial Properties (IIPR).

  • Earnings season can be make or break for some stocks. By abiding by this simple rule, however, it won’t break your portfolio.
  • Checking your stocks often probably doesn’t do any harm, but stock watching does reveal something about you as an investor.
