The market took a step back this week, as Tuesday’s big selloff dropped the Nasdaq and small-cap indexes below their 50-day lines, and pushed other indexes further away from their 50-day lines.

We don’t have much to complain about after a week when our average gain per position was 5.8%, three positions were up double digits, and our worst performing stock was down a mere 2%. That said, today I’m moving two stocks that have just rallied back to Hold, since the near-term upside appears limited in those names. Five of our positions remain Buys.

Small caps added another five points this week as the grind higher continues. Granted, the percentage rise was less than 1%. But nevertheless, the strength in small caps is creating a sense of greater confidence in the sustainability of the market’s uptrend.

This looks like a classic buy-the-dip scenario. Nothing is for certain, but my best guess is we regain the small-cap 50-day moving average line next week, and after a week or two of choppy action, are trading at another 52-week high.

eMagin (EMAN) and Chembio (CEMI) reported earnings and are rated Hold.

We’ll get a truer read on things when big investors return from the beach next week, but going with the evidence, we advise remaining heavily invested today.

Not much has changed with the market during the past week, so we’re sticking with our stance—the Model Portfolio has 40% in cash and holding six resilient stocks. We continue to believe the next major market move is up, but in the near-term, you should take your cues from the market and individual stocks. We have no changes tonight.

After reaching new highs this summer, the S&P 500 index has receded to price support around 2,120. That’s frustrating for investors because most good stocks will move somewhat in tandem with the S&P, so your stock portfolios have probably been a disappointment in recent weeks.
