  • This week’s covered call trade is a defensive play on a retailer that has outperformed its peers amidst the market mayhem.
  • Note: Due to the celebration of Independence Day next week, the next issue will be delivered Tuesday, July 5.
The market rallied strongly last week, erasing some of the carnage of the previous two weeks, but the main trend is still down and thus caution is still advised.

This week’s stock is a growth company that serves the solar power industry, and the stock looks attractive now because it’s basically been treading water for 17 months.

As for the current portfolio, which is 25% in cash, there’s one Sell.

    Details in the issue

  • Tuesday there were some rays of sunlight amidst the storm, but until proven otherwise, we are in a bear market and should proceed with caution. This brings me to this week’s trade, which is a defensive trade on a recent outperformer, that we recently traded successfully
  • As has been the case for much of 2022, last week there were exciting rallies and nasty sell-offs. And while the S&P 500 fell 1.13%, the Dow lost 0.94%, and the Nasdaq declined 1%, big picture the market handled an avalanche of bad news last week very well. Maybe, just maybe, the market is in the digesting bad news stage.
  • After a modest bounce in May and early June, another thunderstorm has hit the market, driving the indexes and most stocks to fresh lows. Of course, the Federal Reserve is on everyone’s mind these days, but really, you don’t need to guess about what they’ll do and what effect it will have--just following the market’s trends has kept us mostly on the sideline in recent weeks and months, and they’ll be your best guides going forward. In the meantime, we’re actually trimming one of our two positions tonight, but we’re keeping our eyes open for signs the buyers are putting up a fight.

In tonight’s issue, we write about the energy sector, our current holdings and a few new ideas, too. We offer no predictions and remain mostly safe on the sideline, but the environment is certainly ripe for a turn given how everyone’s predicting doom, so it’s important to keep your head up and be ready should the evidence improve.

  • Despite some optimism early last week, the sellers obliterated that hope Wednesday through Friday, as the indexes fell sharply, pushing the S&P 500 into an official bear market (down 20% from its highs).
  • The market’s evidence has clearly improved during the past couple of weeks, so much so that our Cabot (and Growth) Tides are now on the fence, while our old Two-Second Indicator is starting to pick up on a bullish change in character for the broad market. That said, it’s close, but we haven’t seen anything definitive yet--tonight, we have no changes, but if we see some green lights, we’ll be on the horn with two or three new additions most likely.

In the meantime, we continue to hone our watch list and put together our game plan should the evidence continue to improve; we’re not going to go whole hog right away, but after six months of punishing action, we’re remaining flexible and write about a few potential fresh leaders in tonight’s issue.

  • This week we are adding a covered call in yet another earnings season winner that has emerged amidst the rubble of the retail sector.
  • Note: Because of the Independence Day holiday, next week’s issue of Cabot Stock of the Week will be published on Tuesday July 6.

The bull market rolls on, and our portfolio continues to deliver, so I continue to recommend that you be heavily invested in stocks that help achieve your investing goals.

Today’s featured stock is a young and small medical stock that few investors have heard of, but it’s growing fast and the stock is going the right way!

As for the current portfolio, we’re parting company with super-safe Realty Income (O), mainly because something’s got to go.

Also, I hope you’ll join me for the 9th Annual Smarter Investing, Greater Profits Online Conference, August 17-19. We have an incredible line-up of experts ready to share their best picks.

  • The market’s main trend remains up and thus I continue to recommend that you be heavily invested, always working to “upgrade” your portfolio by selling weak stocks and buying healthier ones.

Today’s recommendation is a well-known big technology stock that’s spent the past eight months going sideways, despite the fact that revenue growth has been accelerating. To me, it’s a very attractive setup.

As for our current holdings, there are no changes. After selling two stocks last week, everything looks good today.

    Details inside.

  • The market as a whole is looking healthier, though there are still symptoms of a broad unfolding market top. But our stocks look healthy and all have the potential to move higher from here, so the only change in our portfolio today is the downgrade of DKNG to Hold.

As for today’s recommendation, it’s a company with a great growth story (in the insurance industry) that just came public last May.

    Details inside.

  • The bull market rolls on (though never in a straight line, of course) and Cabot analysts continue to discover great new investments.

Today’s featured stock is an established company that manufactures a very wide variety of sensors for industry, with the automotive industry being number one. Growth prospects are good, and the stock is a bargain.

As for the current portfolio, Broadcom (AVGO) is upgraded to buy, and we’re taking profits in Barrick Gold (GOLD).

  • The market sold off broadly this morning, and it certainly needed it. The market has been too strong for too long! But the main trend remains up and thus I continue to recommend that you be heavily invested.

Today’s recommendation is a search technology company with fast growth and great growth prospects, first recommended by Mike Cintolo.

As for our current holdings, I have two sell recommendations today, B&G Foods (BGS) and Zoom Video (ZM).

  • I hope you enjoyed the long weekend!

Investors in our stocks certainly did, as more and more of them have been hitting new highs. In fact, they’re doing so well that I’m selling none today.

As for today’s recommendation, it’s a young growth stock trading 50% off its recent high—a great opportunity for aggressive investors.

    Details inside.

  • Growth stocks remain under pressure in the market; we sold two last week and I’m recommending selling three more today. When it comes to growth stocks, cutting losses short (and taking profits while you have them) is important.

Still, the market as a whole remains in an uptrend, so I remain bullish long-term. Plus, Cabot’s analysts continue to find plenty of attractive stocks, using a variety of methods. Today’s recommendation is actually a growth stock, boasting both accelerating revenue growth and an attractive chart pattern. This may be an ideal buying point.

    Details inside.

  • The bull market remains intact, so I continue to recommend that you be heavily invested in stocks that help achieve your investing goals.
Today’s featured stock is a small company that’s growing fast and that has huge growth potential as the market for intelligent vision systems booms.
As for the current portfolio, most of our stocks look good, and many are hitting new highs, but I have two sells, Supreme Brands (SPB) and Trulieve (TCNNF).

  • The bull market remains intact, so I continue to recommend that you be heavily invested in stocks that help achieve your investing goals.

Today’s featured stock is a solid grower whose products help millions of people with diabetes manage their condition in increasingly efficient ways.

As for the current portfolio, most of our stocks look good, and some are hitting new highs, but one has to go and the victim this time is Driven Brands (DRVN).

  • It’s been seven weeks since the marijuana sector topped, and every day the picture of this correction gets clearer. For example, today saw a rally across the board in the sector, but if you look at the charts, you see it’s really just an inconsequential blip.

Thus, defense remains the watchword for now. In fact, I am selling one stock in this issue, taking profits and freeing up a little more cash.

Long term, however, prospects for the sector remain very bright, as was made clear by our companies’ latest quarterly reports. And of course, we will always hold the leaders of the sector.

    Full details in the issue.

  • Yesterday was a rough day for stocks in the marijuana sector. Today was better. But overall, I continue to hold the opinion that the sector peaked two weeks ago and that it needs a longer cooling-off phase—a real correction.

Such a correction can take many forms, and it’s hardly worth speculating about what form this one will take. Yet by managing your portfolio carefully, based in large part on the action of each stock, you can get through this correction with minimal pain and be well-positioned to add to your gains when the uptrend resumes—because in the long run, this remains a fantastic sector to be invested in.

    Full details in the issue.

  • The bull market remains intact, despite this morning’s sharp selloff, so I continue to recommend that you be heavily invested in stocks that help achieve your investing goals.

Today’s featured stock is a very conservative one, a solid financial institution with a good dividend, and the prospect of growing earnings as interest rates rise.

As for the current portfolio, there are no changes. It will be interesting to see which stocks bounce best after the selling pressures ease.
