As I mentioned in yesterday’s Weekly Update, I am generally waiting for the stock market’s first pullback, during this recovery from the fourth-quarter 2018 stock market correction, before moving many good stocks from Hold to Buy recommendations. However, today’s news on this stock is so good that the odds of a significant pullback have all but disappeared.

Yesterday was the worst day of the year for cannabis stocks, with HEXO (no longer in our portfolio) leading the way down with a plunge of 22.5% after the company announced that revenue for the fiscal fourth quarter, ended July, would be $14.5 to $16.5 million, well short of analysts’ expectations of $24.8 million.

The cannabis sector has been trending down since the end of March, giving back its spectacular gains from the start of the year, and until now I’ve remained optimistic about our stocks, partially because of their outstanding fundamental growth metrics but also because Cabot’s two main trend-following indicators for the market were positive.

Oil prices and shares of oil-related stocks surged this morning after a terrorist attack on Saudi Arabian oil fields shut down about half of Saudi Arabia’s daily oil output.

Oil prices are volatile now that about half of Saudi Arabia’s oil production is temporarily curtailed. Rising oil prices can help oil and chemical stocks, and hurt airline stocks.

Remain bullish. The market continues to act well, and while the broad market has been futzing around for nearly a month, our market timing indicators are positive and most leading stocks are in good shape. Only change tonight is putting one position back on Buy.

The S&P 600 Small Cap Index has pulled back a bit more after trading up near the high end of my expected trading range last week. We’ll continue to watch this range (900 to 1,000) as I expect the index to bounce around within it for several weeks, if not months.

In many individual stocks I’d say the action is starting to lean more towards frothy, than bearish. That’s why I’ve been pulling on the reins in recent weeks, moving more stocks to hold and suggesting taking smaller positions if you’re buying.

The weakness that was troubling the market before last Wednesday’s unanticipated holiday worsened when markets opened again Thursday, and the major indexes are back at their correction lows. I was optimistic when the market strengthened two weeks ago, for now it’s time to stay defensive. That means selling half of one our holdings. But on a positive note, some sectors are still working well, and I’m moving both our REITs back to Buy.

The Japanese phrase, hara hachi bu, translates into something like “belly 80 percent full,” or “eat until you are eight parts full.”

I’m making four changes to the portfolio today.

Remain bullish. There are some cracks in the market’s armor, with some major indexes softening and the broad market under more and more pressure. However, our two trend-following indicators are positive and most leading growth stocks are acting fine. While we’re keeping a close eye on our stocks and will take action if necessary, we’re not making any major moves tonight.

There’s a lot on my mind lately: hurricanes, child-rearing, college freshmen, human tragedy and Dollar Tree (DLTR).

In the short-term, the market could be ready to rest and there’s some rotation going on, which could affect leadership. But, big picture, the intermediate- and longer-term trends are pointed up and even the broad market is returning to health.

We’ve seen before how Trump’s shoot-from-the-hip approach to foreign policy has marked a significant departure from that of his predecessors. But clearly this latest exchange is different. Understandably, the market reacted negatively to the very mention of military conflict with North Korea.

Updates on Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) following the July 18 breakthrough drug announcement, and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), which is in the news again due to the closing of a Virginia restaurant location.

In the wake of surprisingly successful second-quarter results among large-cap banks, all eyes are turning to regulatory reform as the next catalyst to rising earnings estimates among bank stocks.
