COI Quant Trader Issue: May 22, 2023

Weekly Commentary

As we move past the May 19, 2023 expiration cycle, I want to add an iron condor and potentially two new vertical spreads, a bear call spread and a bull put spread, for the July expiration cycle. An iron condor will be the initial priority early this week as we dip below 60 days to expiration for the July 21 expiration cycle. My hope is that by week’s end we will have, at minimum, two new trades for the July expiration cycle, if not three.

Volatility Talk

Nothing has changed…yet again. The range-bound chop continues. Since late March the VIX has traded in a range between roughly 17 to 20. Nothing new here. But, as I stated last week, the tug of war could finally come to an end when the Fed reports again in mid-June, if not sooner with a debt-ceiling resolution. Until then, well, I would not be surprised to see the market and the VIX continue trading in the range that was established eight weeks ago. If so, selling options premium, particularly in the form of iron condors, should work quite well.

Weekly High-Probability Mean Reversion Indicator

Below is my watch list of ETFs and stocks with the most liquid options headed into the week of May 22, 2023.

Here are the various levels I use to determine if an ETF is in an oversold or overbought state.

Very Overboughtgreater than or equal to 80.1
Overbought60.1 to 80.0
Neutral40.1 to 60
Oversold20.1 to 40.0
Very Oversoldless than or equal to 20.0

Each week I also include the current implied volatility (IV) and IV Rank. I look for an IV rank above 40, preferably higher.

Weekly Trade Discussion: Open Positions

Bear Call: SPY June 16, 2023, 430/435 calls

Original trade published on 5-5-2023 (click to see original alert)

Background: At the time of the trade, SPY was trading for 411. We sold the June 16, 2023, SPY 430/435 bear call spread for $0.72. The expected range or move was 393 to 429.

Current Thoughts: We’ve seen SPY rally over the past week which has pushed our bear call spread closer to our short 430 call strike. With 25 days left until expiration our bear call is currently trading for $0.91. Our probability of success continues to sit in favorable territory at 77.89%, but just barely. My hope is that we can get out of our trade this week for a small gain, but in order for that to occur we need SPY to push lower over the next few trading days.
