I’m selling one of our stocks and adding a new bank stock to the Growth Portfolio. I also describe a big June catalyst for banks’ share prices and highlight 11 other bank stocks.

Small caps broke above their six-month trading range last Friday (albeit very modestly and very briefly) even as tech was selling off hard. The reason appears to be that money was flowing out of small cap tech and, potentially, into small cap financials, industrials and consumer staples.

As shares of one of our financial services companies approach long-term price resistance, I’m moving the stock from Strong Buy to Hold, simply because there’s less capital gain potential in the near-term.

Oracle (ORCL) has reached its Minimum Sell Price and should be sold. Kroger (KR) is expected to flounder in the 21.5 to 23 area for an extended period of time so it’s a Sell too.

We’re focused on seeing how the market and leading growth stocks act following the Friday/Monday wave of selling; so far, there’s been some abnormal selling but most stocks are holding key support. The overall market is also still in good shape, and thus, we’re generally standing pat, with around 22% in cash.

Not much has changed with the market environment—the overall market is good, not great, with most indexes above their 50-day lines and the S&P 500 making some progress. The action of the Nasdaq and leading growth stocks, however, remains outstanding, as they continue to race up their charts with minor pullbacks.

Nothing has changed with our overall market view this week. The major indexes are up modestly and earnings season has produced its usual mixed bag of some winners and some losers, but no disastrous blowups among institutional-quality leading stocks.

I want to point out a problem that I foresee, potentially on the scale of the technology bubble in 2001 and the housing bubble in 2007. I think we’re going to have an “inverse ETF bubble.”

It’s been a bit of an unusual week, with the major indexes generally giving ground for most of the first four days, especially the Nasdaq, which had been drastically underperforming. Then came today, when a few bullish earnings reactions from giants like Intel and Amazon helped the Nasdaq rip higher, though so far, it’s mostly a mega-cap affair.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) receives drug approval, Ameriprise (AMP) and XL Group (XL) report third-quarter results, and ratings changes on two of our stocks.

Two of our stocks reported third-quarter earnings beats; another reported third-quarter earnings in line with estimates.

As always, we advise going with the flow. You should remain mostly bullish, but be sure not to put things on autopilot. Honor your stops and loss limits with your existing stocks, and for new buys, continue to look for names that have pushed to new highs and have shown excellent recent buying volume.

All investors should be aware of the quality-control scandal emanating from Kobe Steel, in which the company admitted falsifying data on its steel products for a currently-vague amount of time between one and 10 years. On October 11, I predicted that the scandal would be more extensive in reach than initially reported.

Interest rates fell back this week after the odds of a December rate hike briefly fell below 90% (they’ve since rebounded). The trigger was a September inflation data release that showed consumer prices excluding food and energy rising just 1.7% year-over-year, and only 0.1% since August.

One of our stocks beat earnings estimates, another’s rating changes to Buy, plus updates on eight other stocks.

The three major indexes have all booked seven straight sessions of advances, pushing decisively out to consecutive new highs and leaving their moving averages far behind. All in all, it’s hard to imagine a more supportive market environment.

The stock market finally experienced a big shakeout last Wednesday, and the S&P 500 closed down more than half a percent for the first time in 50 days. But the major indexes bounced Thursday to end the week about flat, and yesterday saw another big rally.

Many of the undervalued growth stocks that I follow have neutral or bearish price charts right now. No doubt they’re tuckered out from the bullish price action in 2017!

The big picture is looking better this week. Small caps rode the momentum from the end of last week to a 52-week high yesterday. And early market action today suggests they’ll be able to hold onto those gains.
